It began as a celebration of peace between the Aetas (indigenous people) of Panay Island and the Malays from Borneo who arrived at the island seeking a new place to live. There are two different theories about how the festival started. WebPacita Abad (1946-2004) was born in Basco, Batanes, a small island in the northernmost part of the Philippines, between Luzon and Taiwan. Her more-than-thirty-year painting career began when she journeyed to the United States to undertake graduate studies. After that trip, Pacita never stopped traveling or painting.
